Larvae Under the Lights...

I have had the great good fortune to spend much of my life in remote corners of our planet, investigating wildlife communities.  From Amazonian rainforests to subterranean rivers in Southern China to the open oceans of our planet, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have been able to spend lots of time in these haunts.  There is a quote that really struck me when I first read it:

"When one man, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself."

- Jacques Yves Cousteau, Oceanographer

First trawl of the cruise!

Hello everyone!

This is Bianca Ruiz, a master’s student in Dr. Tracey Sutton’s lab at Nova Southeastern University, coming to you live from the R/V Point Sur as we kick off our DP10 cruise!

Day one was a success! After the crew assembled our MOC10 nets and set up the lab, it was time to start collecting samples. Our first net of the cruise was deployed on April 22nd at 2100 and retrieved on April 23rd at 0230.

On our way!

The DEEPEND team during our safety briefing

Hello, everyone!  Heather J. here and wanted to share what we’ve been up to since arriving to our home for the next two weeks, the R/V Pt. Sur docked in Gulfport, MS.  Yesterday was a flurry of activity as the team loaded gear, put equipment together and made sure we had everything ready to head out by midnight.
