The DEEPEND timeline, illustrating the diversity of life in the Gulf of Mexico
The DEEPEND timeline was conceived by world-class photographer Danté Fenolio as a platform through which the DEEPEND team could convey the biodiversity that they have encountered in the Gulf of Mexico to the general public. So much amazing biodiversity turned up in the trawling nets that we figured there had to be a way to show it all off. The timeline allowed for a progression through the different cruise trawls and it allowed for a photographic display that we don't think has been developed or matched by any other deep sea biological survey. There are images of some exceptionally rare deep water species and of some more common species. The net result is a celebration of the wildlife living in the water column of the incredibly diverse Gulf of Mexico.

Master's Monday Blog Series
DEEPEND Starts the Master’s Monday Blog Series
We are beginning a blog series which will feature DEEPEND Master’s students and their thesis’ projects. Every other Monday we will post a new blog from one of our graduate students describing their research and what they have found thus far. The blogs will have exciting images related to their work from the field or in the lab. Our very first Master’s student to post a blog was Kristine Clark, a Master’s student at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, who works on heteropods. What is a heteropod? Find out here!
Today we are featuring our second Master’s student blog by Sebastian Velez, a student at Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter, FL. Sebastian studies juvenile snappers and groupers found way offshore! Read all about his work here.
Please visit the blog homepage to read these and other exciting blogs. Do you want to be notified when we post new content? Subscribe to our blog on the blog homepage!
DEEPEND display booth at their Sea Life Facility
Texas A&M University has created a DEEPEND display booth at their Sea Life Facility. This booth allows visitors to learn about deep-sea and epipelagic research through posters, interactive educational games, and educational information hand-outs. Hundreds of visitors (including grade school children, senior citizen groups, new students and parents, undergraduate and graduate students) get to view and interact with the DEEPEND booth each year.
DEEPEND featured all week long on the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s Oceanscape Network
CREEP INTO THE DEEPEND, YEAR 3: The deep is by far the largest affected habitat from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Join diverse scientists as they continue their long-term investigation on impacts of this environmental disaster on the deep-sea from December 4 to 8, 2017.
Creep Into the DEEPEND is a WhaleTimes, Inc. Virtual Research Mission, in cooperation with the DEEPEND Consortium and the Oceanscape Network. For more information visit whaletimes.org
